A DUST mite to which up to one person in 10 is allergic may be a cause of ‘sick building syndrome’, a mysterious illness that affects many office workers. They suffer from lethargy, headaches, and irritations of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. Paul Leinster of Thomson Laboratories, a consultancy based in Milton Keynes, told the annual conference of the British Occupational Hygiene Society at the University of York that examinations of 10 office premises in England had shown unexpectedly high concentrations of the European house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus).
